A new California-based team study may change the way lithium-ion batteries are charged in consumer electronics and electric vehicles, resulting in longer life and more practical battery power.
In the work, it challenges the common held view that slowly charging the battery helps to prolong its life, it is harmful to the battery if a large amount of energy is withdrawn in a short time. William of the Stanford Research Institute said, "We have always considered the battery to be a single device, like the iPhone battery has trillions of particles. We have been looking at the macro level as a scientific group, how to focus on the whole battery work on a single particle."
The team used particle accelerators in the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at the Department of Energy to observe the behavior of individual particles, battery charging and discharging. This is the first time to perform such detailed observation and recording. Instead of an even distribution of current, all particles are gradually charged, but actually get absorbed by individual particles or time until each small group of particles is charged for a short time, and then transferred to the next one. A battery effectively charges particles through a series of very fast charges. The researchers were surprised because fast charging was also considered to damage the battery.
