SUV: The fastest growing rankings show a changeable pattern

Despite the Japanese car earthquake, the SUV growth in the first half of the year still maintained its leading position in all market segments. The latest statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that in the first half of the year, SUVs for sports utility vehicles sold 70.57 million units and 716,600 units, an increase of 18.49% and 20.58% year-on-year, still the fastest growing market segment. However, in the first half of the year, the SUV rankings showed a changing pattern, and many models were ranked first.

Changing rankings

Previously, SUVs had a relatively stable position. CR-V has always been a leader. Especially since the beginning of this year, CR-V has sold more than 15,000 units a month, even more than a conventional B-Class. It is only Harvard's full range of products that can compete with CR-V. However, after entering April, sales of CR-V continued to drop to 10,000 units due to continued earthquake effects in Japan. In May and June, even the level of 5,000 vehicles was quickly overtaken by latecomers. In February and April, Tiguan ranked first in the SUV with more than 10,000 cars. After entering May, the Beijing Hyundai ix35 also topped the list with more than 10,000 vehicles. In June, Dongfeng Nissan’s customers emerged. With 11,000 results, it ranked first for the first time.

In addition to a single model, more manufacturers played the "model" combination to impact the CR-V's leading position, Great Wall Haval also won the first half of the sales championship in the H + M series portfolio, and Beijing Hyundai's "ix35 + Tucson" combination, Dongfeng Yueda Kia’s combined sales of “smart run + lion running” also often exceed 10,000, and Dongfeng Nissan’s “Hacker + Chi Chun” is also a powerful combination.

Although the decline of CR-V has been affected by the earthquake in Japan, it cannot be denied that the advantages of CR-V are weakening due to the constant participation of new SUVs. After CR-V resumes normal production in the second half of the year, it is not known whether it can be restored.

SUV has not yet reached the "inflection point"

After 27 consecutive months of arrogance, the SUV market suddenly came to a standstill. In April, the year-on-year growth of the SUV market has dropped to 19%. From the May data, SUV sales volume was 99,600 units, a year-on-year decrease of 19.74%. Decline 4.06%. As a result, the arguments regarding the arrival of a new turning point for the SUV are invariably heard. In fact, is this true?

The sharp decline in Japanese SUVs is the main reason for the overall downturn in the SUV market. The “culprit” behind this is the Great Japan Earthquake. Taking CR-V as an example, this month's sales have remained at more than 10,000 SUV championship models. In May, the sales volume was only 5003 units. For the monthly SUV market with a sales volume of only 100,000 units, the CR-V decreased by more than 5,000. Vehicles mean a 5% decline! The sales of RAV4 and Highlander were all seriously affected by the earthquake. The SUV market is still far from reaching its peak because there are still too many people who like SUVs. Right now is the peak period for redemption or purchase of the second vehicle. The first choice is the SUV. If you don’t believe it, go to the market and wait until the longest domestically produced models are Tiguan and the Audi Q5.

In 2010, the SUV market achieved more than 100% growth, thus reaching 1.32 million vehicles in one fell swoop, but it still accounted for only 7.3% of the total market of 18 million vehicles, less than half of the US SUV ratio. This also means that the SUV market is still far from reaching the end of growth.

According to incomplete statistics, in the second half of the year, there will be ten Dongfeng Nissan Loulan, SAIC Roewe W5, Emgrand EX7, Na Zhijie SUV 7, Brilliance Chinese SUV, Brilliance Jinbei S30, and Beiqi B40 listed on the 10 SUVs, with everyone’s intuition.
