Japan develops new gas sensor for mobile detection terminal

The gas sensor is mainly used to detect nitrogen oxides. In the experiment, the researchers used a wire with a diameter of 10 nm to precisely control the heating temperature, and controlled the thermal delay time to sub microseconds. The sensor can detect the gas concentration through the current change and the energy consumption value is the skin coke. level.

Currently used gas sensors have semiconductor sensors that use thermal conductivity variations. Since the change in conductivity is small at room temperature, accurate detection cannot be performed. Therefore, the semiconductor sensor needs to be equipped with a resistance heater, and a wide range of heating is performed around the work, and the optimum operating temperature is 200-300°C. This results in the inability of the semiconductor sensor to be mounted on a plastic substrate, which hinders the development of a mobile detection terminal.

The gas sensor developed this time has low energy consumption and does not require extensive heating, so it can be used in mobile terminals. The sensor can detect volatile chemicals that affect human health and collect big data on related chemical substances, which will create new business opportunities in the future.

The results were published on the July 19th, 2016 issue of ACS Sensors, one of the world's largest scientific and technological associations, the American Chemical Society.
