Conference delegates generally believed that the global economic recession from 2008 to 2009 had a great impact on the chlor-alkali industry and severely depressed downstream demand. Because the profitability of chlorine derivatives has not been restored until 2012, the chlor-alkali industry is still overly dependent on caustic soda. However, once the chlor-alkali industry returns to normal, driven by the chlorine products, due to the balance of alkaline chlorine, the growth rate of caustic soda will exceed the demand growth rate, resulting in the global supply of caustic soda over the situation.

Janet White, chlor-alkali business manager of Tecnon OrbiChem Consulting Co., Ltd., pointed out at the conference that in the next three years, with the rapid economic growth of emerging markets in China and Southeast Asia, global PVC demand will grow strongly. From 2010 to 2018, global chlor-alkali industry production is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 3.6%. The average annual growth rate of chlorine products is estimated to be 3.6%, and the annual average consumption growth of caustic soda is 3.2%.

Barclays Bank Japan Securities General Manager Yamada Yamada also agreed that global PVC demand will increase. He said that in the next five years, driven by the growing demand for PVC in emerging Asian economies, the global chlor-alkali plant operating rate will increase. Although the current global economy is in a challenging period and China’s economic growth is affected by the global environment, he firmly believes that developing countries represented by China will promote the recovery of the global economy. In the next five years, the demand for polyvinyl chloride will increase with the development of infrastructure in emerging economies such as China, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.

According to ICIS statistics, China is currently the world's largest consumer and producer of polyvinyl chloride, accounting for about 30% of global demand and 60% to 65% of Asia's consumption. In 2011, the demand for PVC in China was approximately 13.3 million tons, an increase of 8% from 2010. According to data from Barclays Bank, China's annual production capacity of caustic soda in 2011 was about 34 million tons, accounting for 41% of the world's total, ranking first; the second largest was the Americas, accounting for 21%; Europe and the CIS accounted for 18%; The remaining Asian countries and regions together account for 16%; the Middle East and Africa account for about 4%. China's demand for caustic soda accounted for 34% of the world's total, followed by Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States accounted for 20%, North America accounted for 18%, South America accounted for 5%.
