Design and Development of 4-axis Precision CNC EDM Machine

Abstract : This paper introduces a new type of 4-axis precision EDM machine. The main structure of the machine tool adopts a column layout scheme. The spindle and feed system are driven by electric spindle and linear motor respectively. The machine tool control system adopts PC-based open CNC. System, workbench drive adopts semi-closed-loop control scheme, spindle feed adopts full closed-loop control scheme; and developed control software based on Windows operating system.

In recent years, foreign EDM processing technology has developed rapidly. The development of EDM milling, mixed powder processing, fuzzy control, and micro-EDM technologies, as well as the application of linear motors and expert systems, have resulted in the performance of EDM machines. Very good improvement. In our country, there is a big gap between them in comparison with foreign countries. The existing single-axis CNC EDM machines cannot achieve EDM milling. The research of mixed powder electric spark mirror processing is still in its infancy, with fuzzy control and micro EDM. And so on are still in the research phase of New Zealand.

To this end, we are targeting small and medium-sized enterprises, combining the requirements of mold technology development. Researched and developed sophisticated CNC EDM machines with advanced technology, superior performance and affordable prices.

1 Precision EDM machine overall structure design
The overall structure of a precision EDM machine is shown in Fig. 1. The machine consists of a base, an upright, a worktable, a spindle, and a working fluid circulation system. The common structural layout of EDM machines is pillar type and gantry type. The column-type forming motion table realizes the translation of the X-axis and the Y-axis, and the spindle realizes the Z-axis feed movement and rotation. The gantry type, the spindle mechanism is installed on the gantry, the gantry realizes the Y-axis translational motion, and the spindle realizes the X-axis translational motion and the Z-axis feed motion and rotary motion on the gantry. We adopt the column layout, and the working fluid circulation system is arranged independently of the machine tool.

2 Precision EDM machine motion system design

The machine tool table motion system usually uses the rolling guide, DC servo (or stepper motor) drive, ball screw drive, at present, most of the domestic and foreign CNC EDM machine tools are used in this drive scheme, more mature in technology . Most of the existing 3-axis CNC EDM machines use Fig. 2.

In the scheme shown, the main shaft components are mounted on slides and directly driven by DC or AC servo motors. The feed motion of the main shaft is guided by a rolling guide, driven by a DC or AC servo motor, and driven by a ball screw, which drives the carriage to feed. In order to withstand the impact caused by the high-speed jump of the spindle, this structure adopts a coarser ball screw and a larger bearing to increase the weight of the spindle. In order to improve the high-speed performance of the spindle, a high-power and high-speed motor is selected.

In recent years, linear motor direct drive and electric spindle technologies have developed rapidly. Germany and Japan have successfully applied linear motors and electric spindles to machine tool structures. This design adopts the scheme shown in Fig. 2b. The spindle feed motion adopts THK. Precision linear rolling guide guide, Siemens linear motor direct drive, the rotation of the spindle directly driven by the electric spindle. Remove the ball screw and its supporting device, so that the structure of the headstock is more compact. As the middle parts are eliminated, the weight of the headstock is reduced, the transmission accuracy is higher, and the high-speed exercise performance is better.

3 precision electric fire, flower forming machine control system structure
The overall structure of the precision EDM machine control system designed in this paper is shown in Figure 3. The solution adopts open CNC based on industrial PC. The system consists of servo drive control, pulsed power control, discharge gap status detection and control, and working fluid circulation system control. In order to shorten the research and development cycle, Gusheng GT-400 is used. -SV 4-axis motor control card for 4-axis motor control, using ADLINK's ACL-8112 multi-function DAQ card for pulse power control and processing state data acquisition.

The servo precision control is the key in the servo control system. In the actual application of the control system, there are three control modes: open loop, semi-closed loop and full closed loop. The imported high-precision multi-pole EDM machines generally adopt the closed-loop control scheme shown in Fig. 4a. The features are high precision, but the system is complex in structure, difficult to debug and maintain, and expensive.

In this design, the workbench adopts the ball screw drive, which has high dynamic precision, and comprehensively considers factors such as economic cost. The servo control of the workbench adopts the semi-closed-loop control scheme shown in Fig. 4b, and the servo control accuracy of the spindle It has a great influence on the machining process. Therefore, the spindle feed servo adopts a full-closed-loop control scheme. As shown in Fig. 5, since the design uses a linear motor to directly drive, intermediate links are reduced, and the difficulty of debugging is reduced.

4 Precision EDM machine control software development
For the requirements of the control system, this article developed the control software under the Windows operating system using the virtual instrument development software LabWindows/CVI. The software main body includes user management, process management, system debugging, help and other functional modules. The user management module is responsible for the system user's increase and decrease and maintenance, system login and logout and other management work; the process management module includes the processing process setting and processing process control; the system debugging module can carry out the machine parameter configuration and CNC and power module debugging; The module includes a system introduction and related help files. The main software interface is shown in Figure 6.

5 Summary

For the development requirements of mold manufacturing technology, a 4-axis precision EDM machine was designed and developed. The device has the advantages of simple structure, reliable performance, and system scalability.
