The Institute of Process Engineering Li Huiquan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences stated that the development of a new process and new technology for carbon dioxide chemical conversion to produce energy and chemical products has become the research focus and technological frontier of carbon and oxygen resources utilization in the world.

On November 23, the 2012 (9th) National Symposium on Carbonate Technology Development and Industry Development sponsored by China Chemical Industry News was held in Tangshan, Hebei Province. Li Huiquan said at the meeting that the use of carbon dioxide as a carbonyl source to synthesize organic carbonates and further cleaning and synthesis of high value-added bulk chemicals has become a research hotspot at home and abroad.

Organic carbonates are a class of high-performance, environmentally friendly chemicals that have a wide range of uses in solvents, electrolytes, organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and engineering plastics. Another important ester chemical isocyanate is an important organic synthesis intermediate, which is widely used in polymer materials, pesticides and other fields.

The transesterification of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is the most successful new technology for the production of carbon dioxide using resources in recent years. However, due to the high cost of the transesterification process and the fact that a large amount of high-value downstream production chemicals have not yet been successfully developed, the large-scale application of DMC is severely restricted. Therefore, the preparation of high value-added chemicals from carbon dioxide by urea has attracted increasing attention. Li Huiquan believes that the preparation of DMC, diethyl carbonate (DEC) and other organic carbonates by alcoholysis of urea is an important way to prepare low-cost small-molecule carbonylation agents.

The development of carbon dioxide by DMC and DEC to synthesize high value-added bulk chemicals is an important development direction. According to Li Huiquan, starting from carbon dioxide, the reaction of dimethyl carbonate or methyl carbamate (MC) with organic amines to produce carbamate products, further pyrolysis can generate a variety of high value chemicals such as isocyanate, polycarbonate, etc. . Among them, carbon dioxide is replaced by DMC or MC to replace phosgene to produce isocyanate cleaning technology, which solves the environmental pollution at the source and becomes a model for green and low-carbon production processes. It is considered to be a major technology with a wide application prospect.

It is reported that the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has a good preliminary research and development base for the preparation of isocyanates and organic carbonates on the coal-based non-phosgene route, diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), and methyl carbamate ( MC), methyl phenylcarbamate (MPC), and phenylisocyanate (PI) can enter the 1,000-ton pilot line/10,000-ton demonstration project. Coal-based diethyl carbonate (DEC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) are about to be completed in laboratory tests. The catalysts and reaction processes developed are suitable for industrial continuous production, and are currently actively promoting the construction of pilot production lines.
